Recreation, Socialization & Education
Today, older persons have many opportunities for recreation and social activities. Many older people continue to pursue activities they have always enjoyed, while some want to try new things and meet new people. Some places to look for recreational opportunities are listed here.
Senior Centers
There are more than 100 senior centers in Maryland. Each offers recreational activities as well as educational classes, health programs and much more.
Colleges & Universities
Community colleges throughout the state offer a variety of educational opportunities for adults. The Community College of Baltimore County offers classes specially designed for Baltimore County's older residents. Some classes are offered at a reduced rate to senior citizens. Some classes are offered at senior centers.
Other colleges and universities offer educational programs specifically for older adults. These include the Evergreen Society of Johns Hopkins University, the Renaissance Institute of the College of Notre Dame and Towson University's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
Elderhostel offers a unique opportunity to travel and learn at the same time. Elderhostel, a not-for-profit educational organization, offers travel and education to individuals aged 55 and older. Accommodations are sometimes not lush—college dormitories are often used—but the chance to meet new people, learn new things and travel are attractive for many.
Health Clubs
Many health clubs offer a discount rate for senior citizens. They offer a wide variety of classes, including those to promote heart health. A quick look in the yellow pages will provide you with a number of options in your community.
Civic & Religious Organizations
Older people may enjoy the opportunity to participate more fully in civic and religious organizations than they were able to in past years. You or your loved one may want to explore whether there are special programs/classes for older adults available through these organizations.
Recreation & Parks Program
Each county and Baltimore City has a Department of Recreation and Parks which offers programs and services for individuals of all ages. For information about specific services, contact the department directly. The Baltimore County web site offers program course listings for all parks and recreation centers in the county. Other county and city websites offer similar information.
Volunteering
Volunteering offers opportunities to socialize with others, as well as to contribute something back to the community. There are many options from which to choose—look around for the volunteer opportunity that suits you best.
