Publications
A number of organizations offer valuable publications to older persons and their families. Information about current legislative issues, health topics, finances and other subjects of interest to seniors can be obtained free of charge, or at a nominal fee, and many publications can be downloaded from the organizations' websites.

AARP

AARP offers a number of free booklets on topics that are of special interest to Americans aged 50+. Topics include health insurance, grand-parenting, Medicare, financial planning, staying healthy, and consumer protection. Each booklet is available also in Spanish.
Medicare

Medicare.gov offers a number of consumer publications for Medicare beneficiaries. Topics include Medicare and You; Medicare Basics: A Guide for Caregivers; booklets on health care costs, Medigap policies and Medicare Managed Care. The website also offers printable versions of guides to help the consumer choose a hospital, a nursing home, a doctor, long-term care and information about how to get a second opinion before surgery. There is information about colorectal cancer, kidney failure and dialysis and preventive care. The site also tells consumers how to file an appeal or grievance. The VA has publications about benefits for veterans and their dependents. You can obtain information about veterans' benefits by calling 1-800-827-1000.
Alzheimer's Association

The Alzheimer's Association offers information, support and services to individuals with dementia and their families. The Association has developed a number of fact sheets and brochures about the disease, its stages, treatment and research, as well as great deal of practical information for caregivers. There are publications about a variety of ethical issues families may face. There are even fact sheets written to help young children and teenagers understand Alzheimer's disease. The American Heart Association website offers valuable information about heart disease as well as stroke risks and prevention, including pamphlets that can be downloaded.

Information and referral agencies provide information over the phone and in person to seniors and their loved ones on a wide array of topics from housing to health care, nursing homes to prescription programs, adult day services to retirement centers and more.
