Adult day centers develop programs and activities to meet the needs of participants, many of whom are suffering with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias.
While Alzheimer's disease and other dementias are usually progressive, a person goes through stages of gradual mental and physical decline. It is helpful to continue to provide positive interaction and meaningful activity. An adult day center can develop an individualized care plan to meet the frequently changing needs of a participant. Attending an adult day center can provide structure, purpose and pleasure for the participant. Providing structured social interaction may be very helpful to those who are in the mild or moderate stages of the disease.
Individuals in the severe stage of the disease are very dependent on others for personal care and supervision. These individuals are not eligible for adult day services due to their need for 24-hour intense care and supervision.
The Alzheimer's Association offers detailed information about the stages of the disease, treatment options, warning signs and more.
